PINCKNEY ISLAND NWR TO CLOSE FOR MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge will be closed to the public all day, Tuesday, March 19, 2013 as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff conduct management activities to improve visitor safety in and around the refuge parking area. Drought conditions over the past few years, as well as saltwater intrusion, have caused a number of large trees to die. These trees that are in areas of heavy public use, such as the entrance road, parking lot, and trailhead, create a hazard to refuge visitors and need to be removed. Certified chainsaw operators from the refuge’s wildland fire crew will be performing the work, which they expect to finish in one day. The refuge entrance gate will close at sunset on Monday, March 18 and re-open again at sunrise on Wednesday, March 20.
