A violent wind storm on December 17th damaged a number of trees just behind the Savannah NWR Visitor Center causing the temporary closure of the Beech Hill Trail.  Fortunately, there was no damage to the VC and no one was harmed.

The Trail has reopened, but the damage dome is apparent and impressive.

Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) will be closed to the public all day, Friday, November 16, 2012, while the annual gun hunt for deer is being conducted. Due to the small size of the refuge and the large number of hunters participating in the hunt, it is unsafe for other visitors to be using the refuge simultaneously.

The entrance gate will remain closed after sunset on Thursday, November 15, all day Friday, and will re-open at sunrise, Saturday, November 17. This one-day quota hunt attracts hunters from all across Georgia and surrounding states.

Anyone interested in participating in next year’s hunt can get information and applications, after July 1, 2013, by contacting the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex headquarters at (843) 784-2468.

Here in the southeast we have escaped another hurricane season unscathed.  Our neighbors to the north were not so lucky.  Edmin B. Forsythe NWR in Oceanville, NJ had significant damage to their dike system which closed their wildlife drive indefinitely.
