March 2012 was a great month for sales at The Gator Hole.  Merchandise sales came to $5250 with an additional $85 in donations.  We had to restock many shirts and books, and are now almost back to our usual stocking levels of most items.  We have sold all but 2 of the special-order Earth Day shirts, with still 11 days to go before Earth Day.  Unfortunately we can't get any more in time.
Next time you are on the Wildlife Drive, be sure to stop by The Gator Hole and check out our inventory.

A 10-11 foot long American alligator spend last Friday and Saturday sunning himself around the Savannah NWR Visitor Center.  I missed him on Saturday and went looking for him today, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Keep an eye out for him, but do NOT attempt to approach, feed, or harass him in any way.  Alligators are protected by state and Federal law, and feeding an alligator almost inevitably ends in the creature becoming habituated and aggressive towards humans.  This occasionally ends badly for a person, but almost always ends with the alligator being destroyed as a nuisance animal.

If anyone got a photo of him, please send it to me to share.

How would you like to be a reporter for the Friends group web site?

It would help keep the site up to date and interesting if you would send in reports of the activities you are involved in that are refuge related.  This could be a planned activity, a recent outing, a talk or tour that you led or participated in, or a school or community group presentation that you gave.  Any story that is refuge-related will be considered.  Your story might also be selected for our email newsletter.

You will get the by-line for the story, and our gratitude.  Feel free to send photos if you wish.  I reserve the final say on editing stories and photos.

Please send your contributions to webmaster@coastalrefuges.org.

On Tuesday, April 3, we will be returning to Tomkins Island at the mouth of the Savannah River to clear away vegetation.  The island has become a very productive tern rookery, but needs to be cleared every year or two to maintain space for these ground-nesting birds.

It is a vigorous work-out, similar to weeding your yard or garden, but quite rewarding.  If you are interested, email me at webmaster@coastalrefuges.com and I will get you in touch with Lindsay Coldiron, the biologist organizing the expedition.

Diane and Robert Rand, Friends group members since 2009, have shown their continued support by upgrading their membership to the PATRON level, thus attaining Life Membership in the Friends.  Many Thanks Diane and Robert!

Wouldn't your names all look great with a membership upgrade??

A hearty Friends group Thanks! to all of you who made the 4th General Membership Meeting such a success.

First, thanks to our Guest Speaker Giff Beaton for his fascinating talk on animal migration.  Be sure to pick up one of his signed books at The Gator Hole.

Thanks also to Project leader Jane Griess for her detailed report on the past year's activities on our refuges and about future plans.

The meeting could not have happened without the efforts of Friends members Dot Bambach (door prizes), Pat Metz and Connie Terrell (refreshments), John Edman (Info desk and The Gator Hole), and Allyn Schneider (registration table).  Refuge Ranger Amy Ochoa came in on her day off to help at The Gator Hole.  RV volunteers Arnie and Ellie Weisbrot were everywhere, it seemed.  We'll miss you guys!

Our door prizes are always a hit with attendees.  Thanks to Dot Bambach, Lindsay Coldiron, Mike Chapman, Connie and Dale Terrell, Dr Dennis Forsythe, Peter Range, and Kimberley Hayes for donating their time and expertise for the tours.  Thanks also to Lydia Thompson for donating the beautiful etching.

Hope to see you all at our 5th Annual meeting next March!

Our 4th Annual General Membership Meeting today was a great success, despite the rain that forced us to cancel the wagon ride. Giff Beaton gave a fascinating talk on animal migration, and Jane Griess updated us on F&WS activities from the past year and plans for the future. Attendees took advantage of the 20% off sale at the Gator Hole to take home more than $1000 worth of books, apparel, and other items. Local Author Diana Churchill was there to autograph her new book, "A Birder's Eye View" and Giff signed copies of the three titles of his that we carry in the store.

We re-elected Allyn Schneider to the friends group Board of Directors, and elected Sharon Lindsay, Linda Etchells, and Bob Williams to open seats. The BOD met briefly after the meeting to elect officers. Rick Shields will remain as President, while Dot Bambach remains Secretary and Tim Kilty will continue as Secretary. Allyn Schneider was chosen to fill the open Vice President slot.

A great time was had by all, it was good to see many of the membership who have been with us from the start faithfully attending our activities.
